Creativity is Key

A creative outlet does not always have to be painting or sculpting, it can be anything that lets you express the fun ideas on your mind. Don’t get me wrong, those examples work well as far as creativity goes, but there are so many other activities out there that can be expressive – dancing, writing, cooking, surfing, designing clothing or furniture, acting, rock-climbing, singing, playing an instrument, and more! Creativity should be shown whenever possible. You become a happier and possibly stress-free individual when you are able to express your true self and spirit!

If you ever find yourself not sure what to make for dinner, why not come up with your own recipe, perhaps one that requires the use of some exotic food or an ingredient you have never used before. You never know what sort of flavors you’ll end up with! An upside to creating a new dish is the credit you get for your own creative success.

Need a break from school or work, treat yourself to a vacation! It doesn’t have to be super posh and expensive, get creative and make it a “Stay-cation!” Settle down in bed with a nice set of books and a few old movies. Find something fun and relaxing to do during the day and treat yourself to a mani-pedi and a bubble bath. Would you prefer a weekend escape, how about a trip to the spa? Are you the outdoorsy type? If so you have plenty of options, take a hiking trip and stay in a cabin for the weekend. Go camping in a national park – find shapes in the clouds by day and constellations by night. Yosemite and Yellowstone are great spots for camping – especially during the summer and early fall.

Feel free to surf the Web! Who says the internet is not a place for creativity. There are so many sites waiting to be discovered, or create! Make your own website, it could be about anything – art, food, sports, you name it! Maybe you’re an aspiring photographer and need help with a certain techniques. Hop on over to your search bar and get to hunting! YouTube and deviantART are a two good places for tutorials. You could even start a blog if you love to write – Tumblr is perfect for that! Hopefully you will find even more things to do when you search the web – ideas are everywhere!

In general, have fun with life. Make the best of everyday and every experience by expressing your inner personality! On a personal note whenever I’m bored, I tend to write lyrics to music. I’ve been doing this for a while now, and it’s really made me a better writer – the perk of adding a challenge to a hobby. Even sitting down and just doodling can get those creative juices flowing. Do you ever have writers block, or don’t know where to start? Grab a few pencils and pins and start writing everything that comes to mind and soon your thoughts will turn into paragraphs of clarity.

There are an unlimited number of activities and adventures you can embark on to explore your artist side. Just imagine where your new found creativity can take you – any and everywhere – all you have to do is start!

Be Empowered

1. To invest with power, especially legal power or official authority. See Synonyms at authorize.
2. To equip or supply with an ability; enable: “Computers … empower students to become intellectual explorers”(Edward B. Fiske).

Take the reins of your own destiny. Drive your own ship. You have the power to make a difference in your life– Really you do. How? So how do you live the life you have always imagined when so many around us don’t. Here are five tips to living a successful life!

  1. Where are you?: Gather baseline data. Where are you in your life? Where do you live and what do you do for a living? What is your relationship like with loved ones? What do you do for fun? Think about all the things that matter most in your life.
  2. What is your vision?: It may sound simple but think about it thoroughly. What do you want out of life? Where do you want to be in the next 5 or 10 years? What kind of relationships do you want? Write down your list.
  3. Discrepancy Analysis: Look at your two lists in tandem. Where are you now compared to where you want to be? This is where the work begins. If you want to be a wife and mother, how close are you to that vision, are  you dating seriously? Is the wo/man you are dating have the qualities you need in a partner?
  4. The Plan: How will you get where you want to be given where you are? You say you want to own your own business, you’re taking business courses but have no financial resources or plan. Develop one! Seek out financial advice. Partner with someone who has a better handle on finance. Plan our your steps for the next year.
  5. Just Do It: You have a plan now so take the steps to achieve. Sometimes the hardest part is just getting started. Start small and each step you take will lead you to where you want to be.

Lifting as We Climb

In 1896 a group of progressive women from various organizations joined forces to create the National Association of Colored Women’s Club (NACW) in our country’s capital, Washington D.C. Adopting the mantra, “lifting as we climb,” this group was organized by visionary women who saw the need for self empowerment and upliftment against the oppressive force of racism and consistent misrepresentations about the character and respectability of Black women. Over the course of 119 years this organization has been instrumental in organizing and enhancing the lives of women, as well as securing social and political rights for people who have been traditionally disenfranchised.

Fast forward one hundred years and myths and stereotypes about Black women still exist, as do societal ills. Fortunately, groups of women who fight valiantly to progress themselves and others continue to exist.

Much like the women of the NACW, we too have a mission to empower and inspire women. When U Blush Magazine was created, we envisioned a community of the best and brightest women of today coming together to empower each other to make strides in our respective careers, blaze trails for others, and be the best woman each of us can be – based on our own standards. We are founded on the principle of “lifting as we climb” because to us it’s important to not only reach great heights, but to also create positive change in our communities and help others to realize their potential. We are sassy, have style, charisma, class, sophistication, and big dreams! We wanted to create a network of like-minded women who take part in creating their own identity and reaching new heights.

Our vision is vast and our goals are lofty, sometimes they may even seem unattainable. But when we look back on the empowered women who came before us, we realize we stand on the backs of giants who have made it possible for us to even see beyond the horizon. We pay homage to the women who paved the way for us to be here, including the founding members of the National Association of Colored Women’s Club, who undoubtedly upheld “lifting as we climb.”

Together we can progress, as a network of women linked together, by “lifting as we climb.”

Steve Jobs

“You’ve got to love it and you’ve got to have passion and I think that’s the high-order bit.”- Steve Jobs

Passion. A word so infrequently thrown around. It rears its head on occasion, like a pimple, only to remind us we are (or aren’t) marching toward our goals. A much needed reminder if you ask me, but stirs up feelings of anxiety and stress for others.

It’s a tricky thing to pursue your passion and dreams. Many generations have been groomed to live appropriately and in order. Perhaps to go to college, land a full-time permanent job– and if it’s a union job, even better. To somehow, someway meet your significant other. If you are female then the sooner the better, “Get ’em while you’re fertile girl!” some might say. For guys, at some point someone other than your mother will need to wash your clothes. Or perhaps you would agree with common opinion that turning 60 when your daughter turns 18 is simply not an option. Either way, guy or gal, get a job, get married and have some kids, right?

In age of Lady Gaga’s “Alejandro” and Justin Timberlake’s “Sexy Back”, perhaps instead of having brunch with your girlfriends wondering why you are “40 and single”, what if you were boldly “40 and fabulous!” and ready for whatever life throws your way? And perhaps instead of worrying whether or not you will have the stamina at 50 to play a game of one-on-one with your son, what if you were just happy he wants to be an athlete like dad? And just maybe, if one day you can relate to those scenarios (or if you fit them now), perhaps you can say, “I’m 40 or 50 or whatever age, and I accomplished something most people spend a lifetime avoiding. I pursued my passion, achieved my goals, and made my dreams come true.”

See, life may throw us curveballs but we all know life never throws a foul ball. So if you don’t start swinging, you’re bound to strike out. I could share “10 Steps to Achieve Your Goals”, but there really is only one things that matters: Commitment.

Spend time discovering your abilities, what you like and dislike, and most importantly what makes you feel great! Once that has been identified, warm-ups are over, you’re in the game and it’s up to you how well you play. So be passionate and…

“Play ball!”

Letter from the Editors

U Blush Team

Welcome! The U Blush team wants to thank you for your support as we transition into our new site. It has been quite the process deciding on color schemes, icons, and so much more. We hope you love it as much as we do!

So why are we here? What is U Blush Magazine about? How can you benefit from subscribing to our articles? Well Lovelies…

As young women ourselves, we live and breathe in the same world you do. We are ambitious and hardworking, stepping foot into our adult lives and creating a wonderland around us. In doing so, we realized there was a need for a platform providing young, fun, sassy, intelligent and inspiring information. With this new realization came the desire to create U Blush Magazine, a lifestyle magazine for the modern woman.

The same way we are developing into mature women taking in what the world has to offer, we want to share it with you as you embrace your beauty and uniqueness. While there are several positive messages constantly whirling around us–especially with awesome social media!– we add our hip and sophisticated twist of loving and inspiring energy to the world. Join the positivity, love, and inspiration from our magazine–our connection to you.

We are often asked how we came up with our name, U Blush. Let’s take the acronym BLUSH: Bold, Luxurious, Unique, Sophisticated, and Haute. These adjectives describe the well-rounded and well-balanced woman–but, let’s remember she is still human. By “human” we mean she makes mistakes, she can be selfish, and sometimes can even be too independent and shut people out. The difference is she strives to improve and be her best. She’s not up against a timeline, nor does she compare herself to others. She just is. And we love her just like that.

We can all relate to some aspects of this woman. And the truth is, we can relate because we all have different facets as people, similar to a diamond. From emotions and thoughts, to style and interests–we are living and breathing chameleons, better known as humans.

This is where our magazine content comes into play. We wanted to show the different facets of the U Blush Woman, representing all the qualities she exhibits. Some days she struts Downtown in pumps headed to a meeting, and other days she is lounging watching the Style Network or a Sex and the City marathon. She can order a glass of wine and a light meal at dinner, or have a beer with the boys at the game. But she is still always true to herself.

What type of information can you find in our magazine?

There are tons of goodies for you and your friends to enjoy within U Blush. We cover the following: love and relationships, food and travel, arts and entertainment, health and wellness, and fashion and beauty. We even provide you with cool events in some major U.S. cities under “The Happenings”. The best part? Everything comes from us, a young woman’s perspective. We realize we all have different interests and one size doesn’t fit all, so we offer a variety of topics to cater to your needs and taste– you will surely find your golden nugget somewhere. And let us know what it is! We are always open to feedback.

Stay connected!

Not only have we opened up our minds to you in written form, but you can also listen to us chat it away on our online radio segment, Lifestyles and Art Forms. Our team delivers a weekly bundle of fun and laughs while we discuss the latest in arts, entertainment, and popular culture. Be sure to check out all the fun under “U Blush Radio & TV”.

So there you have it, U Blush Magazine in a nutshell. From the bottom of our hearts, the ambition in our blood, and courage deep inside, we invite you to be a part of our family. We promise to be transparent in our journey with you. Let’s make each other better! A sincere thank you.

With Love,

U Blush Magazine
