Stylish Celebrity Mothers and Daughters

In honor of Mother’s Day, why not honor some of the great mothers-daughter duos who have significantly influenced the world of style? Just like their great genes, it’s fun to see the how these celebrity mothers have passed their styles down to their equally famous daughters.

Jane Birkin and Charlotte Gainsbourg

Jane Birkin and Charlotte Gainsbourg

As far as mothers and daughters go, you won’t find a duo who epitomize urban-European style more than Jane Birkin and Charlotte Gainsbourg. There’s just an easy, no-fuss style about the way these two dress, and being able to look like you didn’t put any effort into an outfit at all when you actually did is something that few people truly master, if ever.

Back in the 60s, Jane Birkin was the doe-eyed, leggy British actress who was known for her love of basic clothes and wicker baskets. These days, you won’t see her toting baskets as purses anymore, but her love of basics still remains. Jane is usually caught wearing casual trousers, a simple t-shirt or sweater, and often a pair of comfy shoes such as ballet flats or even sneakers. To achieve Jane’s comfy-chic look start with a simple pair of pants and a slouchy sweater; these tan pants are a little more interesting than jeans, and the slouchiness of the sweater balances out the tapered leg of the pants.  To help keep the look from going too casual, throw on a pair of converse sneakers and a scarf to amp up the chic factor. Lastly, as a nod to 1960s Jane, throw a straw bag over your shoulder to channel her famous wicker basket.

While Jane was known for her casual-chic style, she was also equally known for her affair with French singer Serge Gainsbourg, which lasted for thirteen years. Their union produced Charlotte Gainsbourg, who has become a famous singer and actress in her own right. Like her mother, Charlotte has developed a style “uniform” of sorts, which usually consists of jeans, ankle boots, a simple shirt, and a cool jacket such as a structured blazer or a leather motorcycle jacket. Charlotte herself has commented on her go-to style, admitting that she’ll wear the same shirt or sweater over and over again “until it’s smelly.” Her urban-chic style along with her no-fuss, windswept hair makes her one of the most stylish celebrities in Hollywood.

To channel Ms. Gainsbourg, start with a pair of jeans, preferably distressed and little on the baggy side; add a t-shirt or sweater, and top it all off with a cool leather jacket. Lastly, throw on a pair of ankle boots and you’ll look like you’re ready to strut your stuff on the streets of Paris. Très chic!

Lisa Bonet and Zoe Kravitz

Lisa Bonet and Zoe Kravitz

When you’re mom’s Lisa Bonet, your dad’s Lenny Kravtiz, and your step-dad’s Khal Drogo (Lisa Bonet is married to Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa), cool style is in your genes. Zoe Kravitz has taken the fashion world by storm in the past few years, with a style that’s a unique blend of rock-and-roll and bohemian, a nod to her famous parents.

But we wouldn’t even have Zoe’s amazing style to drool over if it wasn’t for her mom, Lisa Bonet. Lisa shot to fame playing free-spirited Denise Huxtable on The Cosby Show, where she was known for her ever-fluctuating hair styles and clothing. Lisa is still a free-spirit today, but has found a style that’s all her own. Lisa’s look is very bohemian, with lots of loose-fitting boyfriend jeans, drapey sweaters, and floppy hats. To look like Ms. Bonet, start off with a pair of very distressed boyfriend jeans that are a size or two too big, the baggier the better. Next, to balance out how baggy the jeans are on the bottom, pair it with a tighter-fitting tank on top. To finish off the look, throw on a flowy sweater, strappy flat sandals, and an awesome floppy hat. Now all you need is your own Khal Drogo to go with it!

Like her mom, Zoe Kravitz favors bohemian styles as well, but she often throws in rock influences to create her own look. It’s interesting how Zoe seems to have taken bits of pieces from her parents’ styles to create her own personal look. Just like her style, Zoe’s also proving that she doesn’t need to rely on her famous parents to forge a career for herself, she’s been the face of two Vera Wang fragrances and recently starred in the sci-fi thriller Divergent with Shailene Woodley.

To get Zoe’s boho-rock look, start with a pair of skinny jeans, black pumps, and a bright red bag; these are the ‘rock’ elements of the look. To bring the boho into it, add a relaxed knotted t-shirt and a great hat (this bowler hat is awesome, but any hat you want to add will do!). The combination of these two different styles makes for a unique look, which will be sure to make you stand out in any crowd.

Carine and Julia Roitfeld

Carine and Julia Roitfeld

The name Roitfeld is synonymous with fashion royalty; Carine is the former editor-in-chief of Vogue Paris and current editor-in-chief of CR Fashion Book, and her daughter Julia is a model, lingerie designer, and consultant for designers such as Peter Som, Zac Posen, and Jean-Paul Gaultier. It’s safe to say that fashion runs in their blood.

When asked about her personal style, Carine said that for every-day she usually sticks to the same style formula, a pencil skirt on the bottom and something form-fitting on the top. While this look might be boring on some, on Carine it’s anything but. Carine often picks pencil skirts with interesting patterns and textures, and her tops have featured everything from big bell sleeves to fur. To channel your inner French editor-in-chief, start with a pencil skirt with interesting detailing, such as this gold lace one. Next, pick a top that won’t compete with the skirt, but still has an edge to it, such as this form-fitting leather jacket. Finally, add some eye-catching accessories, such as these bright pumps and geometric bag. This look is fashionable yet serious, perfect for the woman who wants to look stylish at work!

While Carine chooses classic styles that make her look work-ready and serious, her daughter Julia often chooses classic styles that showcase her gorgeous bombshell figure. Julia has curves and she likes to flaunt them, she says she often picks shapes that hearken back to the 1950s, when voluptuous figures were admired and desired by many. But, like her mother, Julia often adds accessories to her looks that take an otherwise safe outfit to the next level. To get Julia’s sexy-classy look, start with a classic staple: the little black dress. The waist-cinching belt and v-neck of this black dress look amazing on feminine curves, and help to create the allusion of more shape for girls on the thinner side. But to take the dress from safe to fashion-forward, add some great accessories like this quilted leather jacket and leopard print pumps. This look is the great for the classic dresser who doesn’t want to look too tasteful.

Sometimes we may laugh at our mothers or give them the occasional eye-roll if they annoy us, but these mother-daughter duos show that our mothers can show us a thing or two about life, even how to have great style!

Turn your Winter trends and favorite items into perfect pieces for Spring! Why let your winter wardrobe go to waste? Here are some ways to put your Winter staples to use this Spring.

Khaki Pants: One of my personal favorites! These pants are comfy, adorable and you can find them in almost every color. I added a bright floral print t-shirt to spruce up the neutral bottoms. Adding a pastel sandal and pop-of-color watch and simplistic ring pulls the entire look together. Keep this look classic by pairing it with a basic textured purse.

Leather Jacket: There is nothing like a leather jacket to give any outfit some edge, but when it comes to spring we want to lighten up the mood by adding lots of bold colors! Pair a high-waisted skirt with a crop top; both essential this season. I love adding fun accessories such as these fruit sunglasses and colored bangles; this outfit has me dreaming of soaking up the sun at an outdoor concert.

Riding Boots: These knee high riding boots are great for walking during colder months but don’t let them sit in the back of your closet this season. By pairing them with a patterned dress with lots of color and a simple yet electric clutch, your everyday brown boots become perfect for getting drinks with the ladies! Don’t forget a fresh fragrance and stackable bracelets.

Flannel: Everyone has a cozy flannel that we are holding onto from the winter months but it’s time to give this staple a makeover. A graphic tee and high-waisted shorts keeps a casual vibe. Add a pair of converse, sunglasses, and floral headband to give this outfit a street style appeal ready for an afternoon bike ride.

Patterned Leggings: They were everywhere this winter from stripes, camo, polka dots and even galaxy print – patterned leggings are here to stay. I chose to add a statement blouse with cutouts and floral embroidery. I am obsessing over this “limone” (Italian for Lemon) wristlet and gorgeous diamond earrings paired with a trendy heel gives this everyday outfit a sense of attitude.

Cardigan: This is an essential in every girl’s wardrobe. Perfect for keeping worm at the office and cuddling up on the couch but this spring it’s time to take your cardigan out to paly. A funky sneaker, sheer top (pairs well with a lace bralette or bandeau) and broken in denim shorts are great for spending the day in the park. Grab an oversized bag and swipe on some eyeliner to complete this look!

Opposites Attract: Jackie O Meets Sci-Fi

It is a universal truth that opposites attract, and this is especially true when it comes to fashion. Sticking with one look or style can make for a simple, clean look, but it can also be incredibly boring. Mixing two opposite styles together can make for a look that is both interesting and unique. For this look we’re going to mix together two styles that most people think would probably never go together: Jackie O and Sci-Fi.

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis is probably the person that automatically comes to mind when the words ‘classic style’ are mentioned, she was known for her love of clean lines and impeccable fit when it came to style. Luckily, classic looks are a great foundation for the building blocks of style, and adding a bit of irony to an otherwise classic look can make for an original and conversation-starting ensemble. The irony in this particular look comes from the fantastical world of sci-fi. Sci-fi clothing is known for its ‘anything goes’ aesthetic, where it’s not abnormal to see sky-high hairdos, outrageous shoulder pads, and cage-wrapped dresses; sometimes all at once!

To achieve this look without it going too costume-y, try to keep the underlying layers clean and simple, with futuristic accents thrown in throughout. Start with a simple black sheath dress and pair it with a cool shrunken blazer, very Jackie! The blazer brings in a hint of sci-fi with its unusual proportions and strong shoulders. Nothing says Jackie O more than a pair of classic pumps, but for a twist try pumps with interesting details, such as this pair with its clear panels and silver capped toes.  Finally, throw in some cool accessories for that ultimate sci-fi look; this chain necklace and diamond studs are classic enough to channel Jackie O, but the unusual shapes and materials keeps them looking futuristic. Lastly, throw on a pair of Jackie’s signature oversized sunglasses and you’re ready to go.  Aren’t you a futuristic fashionista!

Spring Fling

Spring Fling Look

There are always a few items in your wardrobe you save for the perfect time of year – Spring! When it comes to spring many thoughts cross my mind. I think of pastels and tulips, sunny days and cozy nights, soft pinks and purples. I also think of spring flings, the crush of the season!

Crushes are a whimsical affair. You may not know him well but you always notice little things he does. The way he cracks a smile after taking a sip of his morning cup of joe, how he never forgets to ask you how your day is going, or how he always manages to hold the elevator for you. You yearn for these moments of interaction which are on constant repeat in your mind. You just wish he would notice you; that he was more than just a crush.

So with spring flings in mind, how can a contemporary professional stylista catch the attention of a prospective beau while maintaining her composure?

Here are two looks that show you how!

Casual Fridays

Black and White Outfit

The boom, produced what most would consider a Godsend, “Casual Friday!” Originally an American and Canadian trend, the fifth day of the work week provides a subtle sense of freedom for the everyday professional stylista. For a minor history lesson, Casual Friday dates back to 1947, where in the city of Honolulu employees were allowed to wear their signature “Aloha” shirt.

While Casual Friday can be fun and exciting, it is important to remember you are still going to work, so perhaps the mini-skirts, bermuda shorts and skin tight dresses would be best left in the closet. On a personal note, when I think of Casual Friday, jeans and a t-shirt, are my go to items. I would pair them with a chic blazer, so to maintain a minor business appeal. As many of us ladies love our pedicures, it’s quite unfortunate that on a regular basis we can not show them off, so on this day go for an open-toe heel! Lastly the bag! Now it’s not too often that we would break out the “Best of the Best” for an average day at work but by the time the clock strikes 5pm, Casual Friday has me in the mood for Happy Hour. Needless to say cat-eye shades are haute and accessories are a must! So, if you are privileged with the luxury of Casual Friday, Enjoy! If not, this is also the perfect look for a sunny first date!
