Much like the romantic love book and film “Like Water for Chocolate”, where Roasted quail with rose petal jam was the dish that turned everyone on fire in the story. Pair the roasted quail and rose petal jam with roasted potatoes and rose sparkling wine for a sparkling night of love!

Roasted Quail Rose Petal Jam

Ingredients you need

  • 4 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tsp ground cumin
  • 5 tbs rosewater
  • 80ml (1/3 cup) lemon juice
  • 60ml (1/4 cup) olive oil
  • 8 small quail, butterflied
  • 6 tbs rose petal jam* or quince paste

  1. First, place half the garlic, 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon, the cumin, rosewater and 2 tablespoons each of lemon juice and oil in a glass dish. Stir to combine. Add quail and refrigerate overnight.
  2. Preheat a grill or barbecue plate to high. Remove quail from marinade and grill quail for 2-3 minutes each side, basting with marinade, until cooked through.
  3. Place jam, remaining garlic, cinnamon, lemon juice and oil in a pan over low heat and cook very gently, stirring until combined and heated through.
  4. Lastly, Serve quail with a little sauce and scatter with rose petals.

Roasted Potatoes

  1. Preheat over to 400 degrees F.
  2. Put the potatoes on a baking sheet and season with salt and pepper. Drizzle olive oil and sprinkle with parsley. Toss the potatoes to coat.
  3. Roast in the oven for 30 minutes, until golden and crispy on the outside but tender and cooked through on the inside.

Rose Petal Jam

  • 1 pint boiling water
  • 1 lb rose petals
  • 1 lb caster sugar
  • 2 lime, juice of
  • 2 lemon, juice of
  • 2 drops rose water

  1. Fill a large pan with the boiling water. Add half the rose petals, cover and leave to stand for two hours.
  2. After two hours strain off the liquid and transfer to a clean pan. Discard the steeped rose petals.
  3. Add the sugar to the rosewater and stir over a low heat until dissolved. Add the lime juice and remaining rose petals, reserving a handful for later.
  4. Bring to boiling point, reduce the heat and simmer until setting point is reached. To test for this, pour a little onto a cold saucer. Push it gently with your finger. If it wrinkles, it is ready. If not continue to simmer for a little longer.
  5. Add remaining rose petals and simmer gently for another three minutes then pour into a sterilized jar and seal. The rose petals should rise to the top leaving clear jelly underneath.
  6. Pot and cover the jam.
  7. Note that you’ll need to sterilize the jars or your jam will go mouldy. Wash them thoroughly in warm, clean, soapy water, drain upside down on kitchen towel and place on a baking tray in a preheated oven at 140C/fan120C/gas 1 for 15 minutes.

Joshua Tree for Valentine’s Day

This Valentine’s Day should be one that allows you to reconnect and create new memories with your loved one. It should be an escape from the everyday routine and everyday worries; a positive foreshadow to the rest of your romantic year. The perfect place this type of experience is nearby Los Angeles – Joshua Tree. It is one of the few places on earth where you ask people how their trip was after visiting and usually they give you little, to no description. Now don’t be afraid when someone shares vague details about Joshua Tree. In fact most would probably just tell you that you have to experience it yourself, making a trip for yourself even more enticing.

In Joshua Tree the clear and vibrant blue skies, accentuate the contrast of the coffee colored sand, all setting up a beautiful scene for the vegetation to really stand out.  Joshua Tree has a national park that has the most peculiar and mind blowing landscape. It is a space that really triggers out of the box perceptions. With all that in mind this is how a romantic day in Joshua Tree could play out.

First, as you are driving up the 29 Palms Highway, stop at Ma Rouge Coffeehouse in Yucca Valley. Get the homemade quiche and on-site roasted turkey that they nestle in a sandwich, and finish your meal off with a house-brewed coffee. You will be energized after this meal for the rest of your active day.

Second, go to the vintage designer boutique called The End, literally at the end of the Yucca Valley line on the same highway. Here you can get hard to find designer vintage and desert chic jewelry.

Now when you finally arrive to the national park get ready to see rock formations that will defy physics. Every rock will be placed in the perfect nook and cranny in order to hold up a massive mountainous structure. Keep in mind these are all made purely by nature and no human hands have ever altered them.  When you drive through the Joshua Tree national park, you will experience a sense of tranquility because it will be so quiet.  Here you will experience true silence. I would suggest taking this time to journal your sites and thoughts and share those reflective moments with your partner.

After these moments of spiritual and mental centering you will enter an arena of activity. You can rock climb, hike, bike ride, and just leisurely walk to enjoy the scenery. You and your lover even have the option to camp out at night. This is one of the few places near Los Angeles where you can actually see all the stars above you. Underneath these stars, you can cozy up by a campfire and even make s’mores.

Joshua Tree allows everyone involved to live in the moment, and to be fully present with those you care about the most. This type of privacy and moments of introspection that will be enhanced are something you can’t get in the city. Joshua Tree will leave you with a sense of sacredness. You honestly leave a part of yourself there where it will stay ready for you upon your return, right back where you left it. As a spiritual place and very transcendental area, it encourages fluid and radical thought. Never can one forget the experience of Joshua Tree because this kind of adventure is timeless.

Celebrate Valentines Day as a Single Woman

Thought you had to skip celebrating the day of love simply because you’re single? Oh, darling we’re happy to tell you that you’re so wrong. Single is no excuse not to celebrate and give to the person you’ve loved longer than anyone else in your lifetime — yourself! We present you with 3 incredible ways to celebrate loving you (and actually enjoy yourself) this Valentine’s day, despite being alone.

1. Sexy Shopping Spree

Why bother when you have no lover to slip into new lingerie for, you ask? Because it isn’t about a significant other. When we get dressed for a typical day, we choose clothing that makes us feel good. Why should lingerie be any different? Dressing up is something many of us have enjoyed since childhood. Remember all the fun and excitement that came with it? That’s exactly the kind of fun you experience when you drop your inhibitions and take a day to dress up in something sexy that makes you feel great. Dressing up in lingerie is just the adult version of a childhood pastime.

2. Get Intimate… with yourself

Who said you needed a lover for that special V-day orgasm we all long for? Grab ol’ trusty and show yourself some love, or better yet…spend your Valentine’s day scoping out adult stores. Pick up a new, awesome-looking vibrator for a Valentine’s night thrill. Go all out and combine your new toy adventure with number one on our list (the lingerie shopping spree!) for an even bigger V-day bang.

3. Set a Goal and Begin Right Away

Lastly, end your thrill-filled night by setting a goal, and making a step towards it. Just stepping outside of your normal routine and doing something out of the ordinary — even if it is late and you have work the next day — is a whole new excitement in itself. Nothing is more fulfilling than making strides towards a goal no matter how small. Best of all, you’ll have something to look forward to at the end of the V-day night, even if it is just a painting your wall.

5 Quotes of Love that will Light Your Fire

Heart drawn in the sand

Nothing is more inspiring than things other people have said, especially when those things speak to us. With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, who couldn’t appreciate a little inspiration in their love life?  These 5 quotes are a pot of gold because they’ll remind you what love is about, so get ready for a love buzz!

1. Number one is for you rebel lovers, partnered with someone you never wanted to fall in love with:

“Love is the ultimate outlaw. It just won’t adhere to any rules. The most any of us can do is sign on as its accomplice.”

 – Tom Watson

That explains why some folks have a love/hate relationship with love itself.  You simply can’t help who you love, even if they don’t match up as your ideal soul-mate. You can’t “turn off love.”

2.There is no remedy for love but to love more.”

 -Henry David Thoreau

Like the saying “laughter is the best medicine,” Henry’s quote is so beautifully true as it reminds us that love is the medicine  for love. Another way to think of it, depending on the situation: “The only way to get over an ex is to get under the next!” Just a thought!

John Lennon

3. John Lennon’s metaphor for love was too irresistible not to list:

“We’ve got this gift of love, but love is like a precious plant. You can’t just accept it and leave it in the cupboard or just think it’s going to get on by itself. You’ve got to keep watering it. You’ve got to really look after it and nurture it.”

– John Lennon

If any of us have ever loved a day in our lives, we can relate to what Mr. Lennon said. Love can do a lot of things, but it can’t continue thriving through years of  neglect. It may not completely perish, and if you were to dig real deep, you’d still see it in there somewhere, wiltering. But it won’t thrive until we jerk it back up and give it a splash of water. Or better yet, keep watering your love plant on a regular basis and it’ll stay alive and healthy

For number 5

4. For those who avoid love in  fear of being hurt:

“Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.” – Rumi

Powerful, huh? And much easier said than done.  However, when those walls we build up to keep us from being hurt by love are torn to shreds, we can no longer find excuses to continue avoiding love. Fear walls do not hold up to love.

Night Sky for number 6

5. To spark that passionate fire deep within your hearts, my favorite love quote:

“You only need one man to love you. But him to love you free like a wildfire, crazy like the moon, always like tomorrow, sudden like an inhale and overcoming like the tides. Only one man and all of this.”

C. Joybell. C.
